Munich Airport lies roughly 40 kilometres north-east of the city, out in the Erdinger Moos. By car that means about 45 minutes, depending on the time of day and the traffic on the A9. The S-Bahn takes noticeably longer, requires a change and ends with your cases in the crowd at Marienplatz.
Allgäu Airport at Memmingen is often marketed as a Munich airport, but it sits roughly 110 kilometres west of the city. Anyone landing there is standing in the Allgäu, not in Munich. By bus and train the onward journey easily takes two and a half hours, with a change at Buchloe or Memmingen main station.
Nuremberg Airport lies roughly 170 kilometres north of Munich. Via the A9 that means a good two hours, depending on the traffic between Ingolstadt and the Neufahrn interchange. The train is faster on paper, but only with the U-Bahn to the main station, an ICE to Munich and a taxi at the far end.
Salzburg Airport lies roughly 145 kilometres east of Munich, right on the edge of the city. Via the A8 that means about 90 minutes, past Lake Chiemsee and across the border at Walserberg. The rail connection is usable, but it demands the trip from the terminal into town, the train itself and finally a taxi.
Innsbruck Airport lies roughly 160 kilometres south of Munich, in the middle of the Inn valley and a few minutes from the old town. Via the A93 and the A8 that means about two hours. By rail it runs through Kufstein and Rosenheim, with a change and considerably more time for luggage and connections.
Between Munich and Dusseldorf lie roughly 600 kilometres. By car that means about six hours along the A9, the A3 and the edge of the Ruhr region. That is an honest statement and it belongs up front: this route is normally flown, and for most appointments that is the right decision to make.
780 kilometres, around seven and a half hours via the A9 and the A7. It is by far the longest domestic route we drive regularly, and nobody books it because it is faster than the flight. It is booked for two other reasons: because it is predictable, and because you can sleep through it.
Flying from Munich to Frankfurt takes an hour. Realistically it takes four: the drive out to MUC, security, boarding, the flight, the baggage belt and the onward journey into the city. Your car needs the same four hours from your front door to the terminal in Frankfurt, without a single change in between.
Frankfurt Airport lies roughly 400 kilometres from Munich. Via the A9 and the A3 that means about four hours of pure driving time. The feeder flight takes an hour, but ahead of it sit the drive out to MUC, security and boarding, and behind it the baggage belt and a terminal change in Frankfurt itself.
Roughly 590 kilometres, about six hours, almost entirely along the A9. It is the simplest of our long-distance routes: one single motorway, no interchange at which you could turn off in the wrong direction, and a course that has not changed in years. Predictable is what this route is above all else.
230 kilometres, around two and a half hours along the A8. Stuttgart is by some distance the shortest of our long-distance routes and at the same time the one where the decision falls most clearly: flying this distance offers virtually no advantage once you measure honestly from door to door.
Munich lies closer to Zurich, Vienna and Verona than it does to Hamburg. Anyone travelling internationally from here therefore frequently has a choice between a connecting flight out of MUC and a direct drive to the destination airport. On routes up to around 500 kilometres the car wins that comparison surprisingly often.
Roughly 310 kilometres, so about four hours via the A96 and along the shore of Lake Constance. Zurich Airport sits in the north of the city, directly beside the motorway, so we reach it without any detour through the centre. Addresses at Paradeplatz or on the Bahnhofstrasse we serve just as readily.
Roughly 440 kilometres, about four hours via the A8 and the Austrian A1 through Linz and St. Pölten. Vienna-Schwechat Airport lies south-east of the city and we reach it via the A4 without having to cross the centre at all. Addresses in the inner districts and out in the suburbs we serve just as readily.
Roughly 500 kilometres, so about five and a half hours across the Brenner, down through the Adige valley and out into the Po plain. It is the most demanding of our international routes and by far the most striking one to look at. Malpensa, Linate and Bergamo we serve as readily as addresses in the city.

Verona-Villafranca Airport lies south-west of the city, directly beside the motorway and reachable without a detour. From there it is under twenty minutes to Lake Garda, which is why this is our most booked Italian route in summer.
