Neuschwanstein Castle Tour from Munich

Two hours to the Allgäu

The most famous castle in the world, in peace

Neuschwanstein lies roughly 120 kilometres south-west of Munich, high above the village of Hohenschwangau. Two hours through the Alpine foothills, and then it is suddenly there, white against green slopes. It is one of very few destinations that genuinely looks the way it does in the photographs.

We collect you at your hotel and drive into Hohenschwangau. The last kilometre and a half up to the castle you cover on foot, by carriage or by shuttle bus, because beyond that nobody is allowed to drive. Your chauffeur waits in the village while you are up at the castle.

Tickets and time slots

Visiting Neuschwanstein privately

One piece of advice that rescues a great many visits: tickets for Neuschwanstein must be booked online in advance, and for a fixed time slot. Anyone arriving without one sees the castle from the outside only. We tell you exactly what to watch out for when you book and set the departure time precisely around your slot, with a comfortable buffer for the drive and the climb.

The walk from the car park up to the castle takes around forty minutes and goes steadily uphill throughout. Anyone not steady on their feet takes the carriage or else the shuttle bus, though neither of them goes quite all the way to the top either. Allow yourself four to five hours on site if you also want to see Hohenschwangau and the Marienbrücke.

As a management consultant I fly a great deal, so I ride with them almost every week — and I'm extremely satisfied! The cars are always impeccably kept, usually luxury-class limousines like the Mercedes S-Class or the BMW 7 Series.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the drive from Munich to Neuschwanstein take?
Around two hours for roughly 120 kilometres. We drive as far as Hohenschwangau, the village below the castle. The last kilometre and a half up you cover on foot, by horse carriage or by shuttle bus.
Do I need tickets in advance?
Yes, absolutely. Tickets for Neuschwanstein are sold online for a fixed time slot and are often sold out. Without one you see the castle from the outside only. Book the ticket first, then the tour.
Can you drive up to the castle?
No, nobody may. Beyond Hohenschwangau it stops for private vehicles. On foot the climb takes around forty minutes, and there is also a carriage and a shuttle bus, neither of which goes quite to the top.
How much time should we allow?
Four to five hours on site if you also want to see the Marienbrücke, Hohenschwangau or the Alpsee alongside the guided tour. With the drive out and back that makes a full day.
When is it least crowded?
Early. Between eleven and three it is at its busiest, considerably so in summer. With an early time slot and a departure from Munich at eight you have the morning almost to yourself.
Can we visit Linderhof on the same day?
Yes, many people do. Linderhof lies a good hour away towards Oberammergau. Two royal castles in a day is sporting but doable if you set off early. Mention it when you enquire.
Castle and Alpsee

Neuschwanstein day tour from Munich

Neuschwanstein is the most visited castle in Europe, and you notice it. Between eleven and three it is busy, in summer very busy. Anyone booking an early time slot and leaving Munich at eight has the whole morning almost to themselves. That is the one genuine trick here, and it only works without a coach timetable to obey.

The Alpsee down in the valley is overlooked by most visitors, even though it lies only ten minutes' walk away. Turquoise water, a path running right around the shore and far fewer people than up at the castle. If you have an hour left over after the guided tour, that is by far the best way to spend it. Your chauffeur is waiting for you anyway.

On the way back Linderhof Palace can easily be added on, a good hour away towards Oberammergau. Two royal castles in a single day is sporting but entirely doable if you set off early enough in the morning. Just say so when you enquire and we will plan the timings accordingly from the outset.

For an enquiry we need the date, the pick-up address, the number of guests and your ticket time slot as soon as you have it in hand. You then receive a fixed price for the whole day, in which the waiting time and the parking fees are already included. Two or three of you travel in the E-Class, six in the V-Class.
