Eagle's Nest Tour from Munich, Private

Mid-May to October

1,834 metres up, and the view delivers

The Eagle's Nest stands at 1,834 metres above Berchtesgaden, roughly two hours from Munich. From the terrace you look down on the Königssee, across to the Watzmann and, in clear weather, as far as Salzburg. It is one of very few places where the view genuinely delivers what the photographs promise beforehand.

Two things are worth knowing in advance: the Eagle's Nest is only open from mid-May until the end of October, and no private vehicle is permitted to drive up. We take you to the Obersalzberg Documentation Centre, and from there the RVO bus carries you onwards.

Process and season

Eagle's Nest day tour from Munich

The sequence is fixed and cannot be shortened: we drive you up to the Obersalzberg Documentation Centre. From there the RVO bus takes you up the Kehlstein road, and the final 124 vertical metres you cover in the historic brass lift or on a footpath. The return runs the same way. Allow three to four hours from Obersalzberg onwards for the whole thing.

The Königssee lies only twenty minutes away and is easy enough to add on if you set off early. The electric boats to St. Bartholomä take their time, though, a good three hours there and back including a stop. Both of them in one day is entirely possible but it does make for a long one. We will tell you honestly at the booking whether it fits your particular schedule.

As a management consultant I fly a great deal, so I ride with them almost every week — and I'm extremely satisfied! The cars are always impeccably kept, usually luxury-class limousines like the Mercedes S-Class or the BMW 7 Series.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the Eagle's Nest open?
As a rule from mid-May until the end of October. Outside that period snow lies up there and the Kehlstein road is closed. Check the current end of season before booking, as it shifts depending on the weather.
Can you drive us up to the Eagle's Nest?
No, no private vehicle may. We take you to the Obersalzberg Documentation Centre, from where the RVO bus runs up the Kehlstein road. The final vertical metres you cover in the brass lift or on foot.
How long does the drive from Munich take?
Around two hours to the Obersalzberg Documentation Centre. From there the bus, the lift and your time at the top are added, three to four hours in total. With the return that makes a full day.
Are the tickets included in the price?
No. The RVO bus, the lift and admission to the Obersalzberg Documentation Centre you pay on site yourself. Our fixed price covers the drive, your chauffeur's waiting time and the parking fees.
Can we add the Königssee?
Yes, it lies twenty minutes away. The boat to St. Bartholomä takes a good three hours, though. Both in one day is doable but long. We will tell you at the booking whether it fits your schedule.
Is a guide worthwhile?
At the Obersalzberg particularly so. The history of the place does not explain itself, and a guide makes for a noticeably different day. We have guides in English, German and other languages.
Obersalzberg

Eagle's Nest and Berchtesgaden privately

The Eagle's Nest draws two kinds of visitor. Some come for the view and for the mountain road, which as an engineering feat of the 1930s still impresses today. Others come for the history, which at the Obersalzberg is unavoidably present. Both of those can be combined perfectly well within a single day.

The Documentation Centre, where the buses depart, is therefore rather more than a car park. Anyone allowing themselves an hour there before going up sees the whole place differently afterwards. A guide, whom you can add through us, makes a considerable difference to the day, particularly for guests from abroad who arrive without the background.

On the season: it is open from mid-May until the end of October, and outside that period snow lies up there and the road is closed. In July and August the buses and the lift are busy, so an early start helps. If you enquire in winter we will tell you straight away and suggest Berchtesgaden and the Königssee without the Kehlstein instead.

For an enquiry we need the date, the pick-up address, the number of guests and whether the Königssee should be added. You receive a fixed price for the whole day including waiting time and parking fees. Tickets for the RVO bus, the lift and the Documentation Centre you pay on site yourself.
